Cobras Split Home Opener With Wolves

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team split their home opening series with Newberry College (6-2) on Sunday (Feb. 10).  The series split marks the Cobras at 2-2 on the year.

In game one of the series the Cobras found themselves down 3-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two runners on, Katelyn Szupello singled to left field and drove in a run to mark the game at 4-4.  Clarissa Suttle then stepped up to the plate, and laced a pitch past the short stop to drive in the game winning RBI and earn the walk-off.  Coker captured game one 5-4.

Lauren Phillips was credited with the game one win, after throwing seven innings and striking out three Newberry batters.  Phillips only allowed six hits and four runs to start the double-header.

As a team, the Cobras collected nine hits, four RBIs, and six walks in game one.

Coker got on the scoreboard quickly to start the second game of the series.  Sydney Weatherford earned the first RBI of game two with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Sarah Rountree

The Cobras continued their scoring in the bottom of the second when Suttle hit a double into center field, allowing Szupello to round the bases and score for the Cobras to make it a 2-0 game.

Coker would hold the Wolves scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but a two run inning in the top of the fifth would eventually tie the game at 2-2.  Newberry tallied three more runs onto their score in the top of the seventh to give themselves a 5-2 advantage. 

Coker would earn a run in the bottom of the seventh, but they would eventually surrender the game 5-3 in favor of the Wolves after Newberry collected their third and final out. 

Shelley Jeffcoat would be credited with the win for the Wolves in game two, while Phillips would be marked with her first loss of the season.  Phillips pitched two innings allowing three runs on five hits. 

The Coker softball team will return to Saleeby-Stokes field on Wednesday (Feb. 13) to host St. Andrews.  The double-header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the second game a 3 p.m.
