Coker Splits Twinbill with Wingate

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team picked up a walk-off 13-11 win in the second game of their doubleheader against Wingate University on Saturday, but narrowly lost game one to the Bulldogs 5-4.

GAME ONE

Sydney Weatherford (Scranton, S.C.) was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the loss suffered by the Cobras in game one. Katelyn Szupello (Port Orange, Fla.) drove in the Cobras other run, while Gina Easler (Edgefield, S.C.) had a pair of hits with a run scored.

Senior right-hander Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.

The Cobras trailed 5-0 before scoring four unanswered runs in the sixth inning. However, Coker was not unable to push across any more runs.

GAME TWO

Weatherford belted two more home runs and Kentesha Jenkins (Darlington, S.C.) hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the Cobras to take home the win in game two.

Coker held a an 8-4 heading into the seventh inning, but the Bulldogs plated seven runs in the top half of the inning to take a 11-8 lead. The Coker offense answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, earning the win.

Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) (1-1) earned the win with two-thirds of an inning on the mound allowing two runs on two hits.

Weatherford finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored, while Jenkins was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jennifer Sanborn (Beaufort, S.C.) had a triple with three RBIs.

The Cobras hit the road for on Sunday to take on the Newberry Wolves in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Weatherford hit three home runs with eight RBIs in Coker's two games on Saturday.

The McDonald's Player of the Game is presented by the Hartsville McDonald's and is given to the most outstanding performer during each Coker College home athletic event.
