HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Thanks to Clarissa Suttle’s (Piedmont, S.C.) RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning the Coker Cobras were able to pick up a 2-1 win over West Virginia State and split their non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Cobras lost game one to the Yellow Jackets 3-0, but won game two 2-1 snapping their five game skid.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the day, West Virginia State’s Kelsey Lorraine put on a pitching clinic as she dominated the Cobra hitters. She tossed a complete game shutout, scattering four hits while striking out 10 to earn the win.

Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (4-5) took the loss. She gave up three runs, one earned, over seven innings of work on nine hits with two punch outs.

Three Yellow Jacket hitters had two hits apiece; Mallory Hilton, Marlena Frye Runyon and Margaret Osborne. Runyon’s hits included a double and a run scored, while Osborne drove in a run and Bobbi Harper drove home a pair of runs.

Sarah Rountree (Plantation, Fla.) had two of Coker’s four hits, with Stacy Burr (Darlington, S.C.) and Lauren Brailsford (Greer, S.C.) picking up a hit each.

GAME TWO

In game two WVSU opened the game with a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Runyon, but that would be the only scoring for the Yellow Jackets for the remainder of the game. Coker hurler Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the remaining six innings.

Coker notched their first run in 19 innings in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at one apiece and then it was Suttle that gave the Cobras the win with her RBI single in the seventh.

Atkinson (4-6) got the win going the distance allowing one run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts, while Sara Pelegreen took the loss for WVSU. She gave up two runs, none earned, on four hits with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

Rountree was the Cobras leading hitter yet again with two of the teams for hits, while Suttle was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Bri Jacobs (Bolton, N.C.) had the Cobras other hit.

Runyon finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI and Brittany Hyatt was also 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Cobras will take the road for their next four games as they head to North Carolina to take on Barton College on Saturday in a conference doubleheader. Then they will travel to Mount Olive for another conference doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on both days.
