HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Cobra softball team picked up a pair of 8-0 victories over the visiting Falcons of St. Augustine’s College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference softball doubleheader. Coker won both games by run differential; winning game one in six innings and game two in five innings.
GAME ONE
Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) (3-4) tossed a masterful three hit shutout for the Cobras to pick up the win in game one. In addition to her shutout work she struck out eight batters along the way.
Michelle Shackelford (0-12) took the loss allowing eight runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Katie McElveen (Hartsville, S.C.) was the Cobras leading hitter with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Sarah Rountree (Plantation, Fla.) and Sydney Weatherford (Scranton, S.C.) each had a double with an RBI as well, while Clarissa Suttle (Piedmont, S.C.) had a pair of hits and an RBI with two runs scored.
Jennifer Plair, Angela Wood and Shackelford each had a hit for the Falcons.
GAME TWO
In game two it was Sydney Greenwalt’s (Edwardsville, Ill.) (5-4) spectacular two hit shutout that led Coker to a second 8-0 victory. Greenwalt allowed just two hits and struck out six in the win.
Shackelford (0-13) got the loss, allowing right runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
McElveen and Rountree each had doubles and scored two runs, while Rountree drove in two and McElveen drove in one. Stacy Burr (Darlington, S.C.) also added a two-run double to the Cobras efforts.
Shackelford and JaNia Jones had the two hits for the Falcons.
Coker will take a few days off before returning to the diamond for a weekend road trip that includes a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Limestone on Saturday and a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Wingate. Games will start at 1:00 p.m. on both days.
