BELMONT, N.C. – The Coker softball team spilt their first Conference Carolinas series of the season with a 6-1 win and a 3-2 loss to Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon. After the day the Cobras move to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
GAME ONE
Three two-run home runs would be all the offense Coker would really need in order to win game one. Haleigh Rogers (Ward, S.C.), Stacy Burr (Darlington, S.C.) and Katie McElveen (Hartsville, S.C.) each belted a two-run home run in three separate innings leading to the 6-1 win.
Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) (2-1) got the win tossing a complete game five hitter with five strikeouts.
Rogers finished the day 1-for-3 with a two RBIs and a run scored, while Burr was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and McElveen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
GAME TWO
In game two, Coker struggled offensively as Belmont Abbey’s pitching held the Cobras to just two runs on two hits in seven innings.
McElveen was the leading hitter in game two with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jennifer Sanborn (Beaufort, S.C.) had Coker’s other hit of the day.
Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (3-2) took the loss allowing three runs on five this with a strikeout in three innings of work.
Coker will be back in action starting March 4 as they travel to the Mid-South Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. March 4-6. The Cobras will face Flagler College, North Georgia College, Tusculum College, Georgia College and State University and Catawba College during the three day event.
