Hartsville, SC – The Coker Cobras took on Anderson University Saturday in a non-conference double header.  Coker came into the weekend at 2-0, after sweeping Brooklyn College Friday.  Anderson came into the day at 7-2.  Coker picked up its third win of the season, 2-1 in game one, but suffered their first loss of the season in game two, 5-1.

Coker moves to 3-1, while Anderson is now 8-3.

GAME ONE

Anderson started senior Casey Deer (Ulmer, SC) in the circle.  Deer went 7.2 innings, surrendering two runs, on four hits, two walks, and she also had ten strikeouts.  Her record fell to 5-2 on the season. 

Offensively, Anderson was led by senior Emily Monteith (Clover, SC) who went 2-for-4 while scoring the only Trojan run.  Junior Amber Duncan (Matthews, NC) had the only run batted in for Anderson, while going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Coker started junior Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, FL) who picked up her second win of the season (2-0), as she scattered six hits, one run, one walk, and four strikeouts over eight beautiful innings.  Sophomore infielder Bri Jacobs (Bolton, NC) went 2-for-2 on the day.  Freshman Gina Easler (Edgefield, SC) went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. 

The game went into extra frames and in the bottom of the eighth, after a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jenny Sanborn (Beaufort, SC) that moved sophomore Sarah Rountree (Plantation, FL), senior Haleigh Rogers (Ward, SC) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive Rountree home. 

GAME TWO

In game two it was Anderson who was able to find offensive support.  Anderson picked up a 5-1 victory behind the strong outing from Deer, her second start of the day.

After picking up loss in game one, she was looking for payback.  Deer went seven innings, scattering five hits, one run, three strikeouts and no walks.  Casey picked up her fifth win of the season, improving her record to 5-3.

The Trojans’ offense jumped on the Cobras’ pitching, scoring four runs in the fifth inning.  Freshman Charlotte Sieber (Dacula, GA) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.  Freshman infielder Danielle Swygert (Fairburn, GA), Monteith, and Duncan also had a run batted in each.  Monteith and Swygert also each had two hits.

Coker started senior Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) in the circle.  Sydney went 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits, while two.  She also had two strikeouts.  Sophomore Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, SC) went 2.2 innings in relief, surrendering five hits, and one run.  Five different Cobra players had hits, with Rogers driving in the only run.

Coker’s next home games will be Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. against Newberry College.
