HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team got their 2011 season and their opening weekend of play off to a great start on Friday afternoon sweeping past the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a non-conference doubleheader. The Cobras won both games by run differential in five innings, game one they won 9-0 and game two the score was 15-1 in favor of the Cobras.

GAME ONE

Coker opened game one by plating three runs in the first inning and then after a pair of scoreless innings they tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Entering the fifth inning with the score 6-0, Coker scored their seventh run on an RBI single from Bri Jacobs (Bolton, N.C.), but with two outs it looked as though the game was going to go the full seven innings until Sarah Rountree (Plantation, Fla.) sent a ball deep over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving the Cobras the 9-0 win.

Beck Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (1-0) earned the win on the mound. She allowed just two hits over four innings with four strikeouts.

Brooklyn’s Marie Oneto (0-1) took the loss. She gave up nine runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

At the plate, Rountree was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Haleigh Rogers (Ward, S.C.) also had two hits, including a triple with two RBIs and a run scored. Jacobs finished with two hits and an RBI and Jennifer Sanborn (Beaufort, S.C.) had a pair of base hit bunts and a run scored. Sydney Weatherford (Scranton, S.C.) also drove in two runs for the Cobras.

Samantha Lombardi and Antoinette Brown collected the two hits for the Bulldogs in game one.

GAME TWO

In game two the Cobras picked up right where they had left off in game one as they scored six runs to open the ball game. They added another five in the second and four more in the third. Brooklyn’s lone run came in the third for a final of 15-1.

Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, Ill.) (1-0) got the win going three innings, allowing one run on three this with three strikeouts.

For the Bulldogs Tara Diesel (0-1) was tagged with the loss. In three innings of work she allowed 15 runs on 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Jacobs was on fire in game with going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs, while Rogers also had three hits including another triple with an RBI and three runs scored. Gina Easler (Edgefield, S.C.) also was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Norah Marley, Katherine Fuentes, Jordan Villany and Lissette Andares each had a hit for Brooklyn with Fuentes driving in the Bulldogs one run and Andares scoring the run.

Coker will return to action on tomorrow as they host Anderson University in their second of three non-conference doubleheaders this weekend. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
