HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team took on West Liberty State in a non-conference double-header on Friday afternoon at Saleeby-Stokes Field. The Lady Cobras won game one 5-2, but were unable to come up with the series sweep, as they lost game two 7-3. Coker is now 6-9 on the year, while West Liberty moves to 3-9.

GAME ONE

A three-run homer by Anna Oswald (Lexington, S.C.) in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Lady Cobras the offensive burst they needed to hang on for the 5-2 win.

The Hilltoppers plated the first run of the game in the first, but Coker took a 2-1 lead in the third. Oswald’s round tripper in the fifth gave the Lady Cobras some much needed insurance, with West Liberty scoring their final run in the sixth.

Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, Ill.) (5-4) picked up the win, tossing complete game, allowing just two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Amy Grubic took the loss going six strong innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Oswald was 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored at the plate for Coker, while Haleigh Rogers (Ward, S.C.) was also 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Ashley Coleman (Charleston, S.C.) also finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Leading the Hilltoppers was Felicia Hulslander with two hits and a run scored, while Katelyn Kumm and Kelsie Cannaday each had a hit.

GAME TWO

In game two, West Liberty scored five runs between the second and the third innings, while they held Coker to just three runs to take an early 5-3 lead. It was then a pair of solid relief pitching performances by Kayla Stanley and Grubic that kept the Lady Cobras off the board through the next four innings and secured the Hilltopper victory.

Becky Fortuna was the starting pitcher and she picked up the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, while Grubic earned the save, in three innings of work. She allowed just one hit and had one strikeout.

Coker’s Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in three innings on the mound.

Courtney Loe was the Hilltoppers leading hitter, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Shelby Wilson, Heather Pulver and Sara Ashmead each collected two hits in the game as well.

For the Lady Cobras, Coleman was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Brittany Owens (Johnsonville, S.C.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Nicole Rountree (Columbia, S.C.) was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Coker returns to the diamond on Saturday, as they host Lees-McRae College in a Conference Carolinas double-header starting at 1:00 p.m.
