Hartsville, S.C. – The winning streak continues and the Lady Cobras stay unbeaten in Conference Carolinas play, as Coker swept Mount Olive 7-2 and 8-7 in collegiate softball on Thursday afternoon. With the combined wins the Lady Cobras winning streak extends to 15 games and Coker improves to 8-0 in the conference. On the year Coker is 23-9, while Mount Olive falls to 18-13 overall, and 4-2 in the conference.
Game One
The Lady Cobras were first on the board, scoring a run in the first on an RBI single by Kimberly Atkinson (McBee, SC). Mount Olive answered the Coker run with two of their own in the top of the second, as Kat Cahoon drove home two runs with a single up the middle.
It did not take long for the Lady Cobras to regain the lead, as the scored four runs in the bottom half of the third, thanks to RBI doubles from Ashton Williamson (Pelion, SC) and Whitney Wallett (Shermans Dale, PA), an RBI single from Jessica Blackwell (Hartsville, SC) and an RBI from Ashley Coleman (Charleston, SC).
Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) held the Trojans scoreless through then next four innings, allowing just one hit in innings four through seven. In the bottom of the sixth, the Coker batters nailed down the win with a pair of insurance runs, with a two run single from Atkinson.
Catlett (15-5) earned the win going seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, with five strike outs.
Ashley Turvin took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits, in two and a third innings of work.
Leading Coker at the plate was Atkinson going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Haleigh Rogers (Ward, SC) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Williamson finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Blackwell was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
For Mount Olive, Cahoon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Aubrey Reinhard and Allison Czerski were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Game Two
The Lady Cobras started game two, right where they left off in game one, as they plated two runs in the first inning with a two run double from Atkinson. After a scoreless second innings, Mount Olive got on the board with an RBI double from Cahoon, cutting the lead to just one.
In the top of the fourth it was Reinhard who evened the game at two apiece, as she sent a pitch soaring over the left field fence for a solo home run. Coker regained their lead in the bottom half of the fourth, as the Lady Cobras scored four runs on three Trojan errors and three hits.
The Trojans made things interesting in the top half of the fifth, as they posted three runs on three hits, cutting the lead to just one, 6-5.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Mount Olive was able to get the tying run across the plate in the seventh, as Morgan Whaley managed to find a hole with an RBI single, tying the game at six.
In the eighth inning, Mount Olive got the go ahead run across the plate with an RBI single from Cahoon. Coker was able to tie the game at seven the bottom of the eighth, thanks to a Williamson triple to right field, and then it was Blackwell who brought Williamson home with the game winning single to left field for an 8-7 victory.
Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) (8-4) earned the win two runs on three hits, with three strike outs in three innings of work.
Jenny Jackson took the loss going seven and a third innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits, with five strike outs.
Williamson was the Lady Cobras offensive leader, going 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Rogers was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Atkinson also finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Blackwell was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, including the game winner.
For the Trojans, Reinhard was 3-for-3 with a home run a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Whaley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Cahoon was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Coker returns to the diamond on Saturday, as they travel to Queens University of Charlotte for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader, followed by a doubleheader at St. Andrews on Sunday, starting at 2:00 p.m.
