Hartsville, SC- The Lady Cobra softball team improved their overall record to 21-9 and current winning streak to 13 with a sweep of Glenville State University on Wednesday afternoon.  Game number one went to the Cobras by a commanding 12-2 score, while game number two went down to the wire with the Lady Cobras prevailing 3-2.

Game 1

In game number one, the Lady Cobras put a three spot on the board in the bottom half of the first to take control early thanks to four walks by GSU pitching. In the bottom half of the third is where the Cobras took sole control of the ball game and put 8 runs on the board, capped off by a Kimberly Atkinson (Mcbee, SC) grand slam.  The lady Cobras put one more run on the board in the 4th inning and clinched to victory in the 5th inning as they were leading by more then 8 runs.

Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) got the win on the mound pitching 4 complete innings while allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.  Leading the way at the plate for the Cobras was Ashton Williamson going 2 for 4 and Kimberly Atkinson going 1 for 3 with 4 RBI’s.  Five other Cobras also had one hit apiece.

Game 2

Game number two was much different as the Lady Cobras prevailed by a 3-2 margin with all three of the Cobra runs coming in the first inning.  A single by Ashton Williamson and a walk drew by Jessica Blackwell (Hartsville, SC) were converted on as Kimberly Atkinson doubled to left center to bring in her 5th and 6th RBI’s of the day.  Atkinson then finished off the Cobra scoring as she was driven in by a double of the bat of Eunice Nettles (Pelion, SC).  From there on out it was a pitching duel as Glenville State put up one run a piece in both the first and fifth inning to keep the game interesting.

Freshman Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) picked up the win allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three.  Shelly Catlett came back came in to secure the save going two innings and only allowing one hit and striking out three. At the Plate Kimberly Atkinson, Ashton Williamson, and Whitney Wallett (Shermans Dale, PA) were all 2 for 3.

The Lady Cobras will put their current winning streak on the line as they play host to Conference Carolina Opponent Mount Olive on March 27th at 2pm.
