Hartsville, S.C. - The Lady Cobras took on the Lees-McRae Bobcats in a Conference Carolinas softball double-header on Sunday afternoon. Coker’s Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) threw a complete game shut-out, as the Lady Cobras won game one 6-0. In game two, Coker picked up where they left off, scoring eight unanswered runs for an 8-0 five inning win. The wins bring Coker to an even 6-6 overall, and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play, while Lees-McRae falls to 9-5 overall, and 0-2 in the conference.
Game One
The Lady Cobras jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a Jessica Blackwell (Hartsville, SC) triple and an RBI single from Kimberly Atkinson (McBee, SC). Lees-McRae held Coker scoreless through the next two innings, before the Lady Cobras tacked on a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 6-0 win.
Catlett (4-3) earned the win going the distance, allowing no runs on three hits, with nine strike outs in seven innings.
Amanda Dodson took the loss for Lees-McRae, allowing four runs on five hits with four strike outs in five innings of work.
Leading Coker at the plate in game one was Haleigh Rogers (Ward, SC) going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs and a run scored, while Blackwell was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Atkinson finished 1-for-1 with three walks, one RBI and two runs scored and Julia Nelson-Abbott (Evans, GA) was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
For Lees-McRae, Salle Horner, Meegan Knowles and Paige Coleman each collected a hit in the game.
Game Two
Coker started game two much like game one, as they scored a two runs in the first inning, five in the second and one in the third, for an 8-0 lead. Coker’s Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) then completed the Lady Cobras second shut-out of the day, as she held the Bobcats scoreless through five innings, giving Coker the win due to run differential.
Greenwalt (2-3) earned the win, allowing just three hits with no runs in five innings of work, while Lauren Gisler took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in an inning and a third of work.
Rogers lead the offense again for the Lady Cobras, this time going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Blackwell and Eunice Nettles (Pelion, SC) were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Ashton Williamson (Pelion, SC) collected Coker’s only extra base hit, going 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
Lees-McRae’s three hits came from Horner, Knowles and Anna Carter, with Carter hitting a double.
The Lady Cobras return to action on Friday, Feb. 29, as they travel to Catawba for a three day tournament.
