NEWBERRY, S.C. – A sixth inning rally in Game Two allowed Newberry College to take one of two games against Coker College in doubleheader action Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Cobras won 5-4 in eight innings in Game One, but came fell in Game Two, 4-3.

Kimberly Atkinson (McBee, SC) was 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs on the day, while Whitney Wallett (Shermans Dale, PA) was 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.

Game One: Coker 5, Newberry 4 (8)

The Lady Cobras were able to hold the Lady Indians scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning as they won Game One 5-4.

Coker jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a bloop single and a homerun to right field in the second inning.

Newberry responded in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning to take the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Newberry extended its lead to 4-2 when thanks to  a double and an RBI single.

The Cobras pulled even in the top of the sixth inning when they put together two singles and a double to score two.

Neither team was able to push a run across in the seventh sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth Coker took a one run lead on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Lady Indians went down in order in the bottom of the eighth, losing 5-4.

Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) (2-2) earned the win going eight innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with nine strike outs.

Game Two: Newberry 4, Coker 3

Newberry scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and sat the Cobras down in order as the Lady Indians came from behind to win 4-3.

Coker took a 3-0 first inning lead on a three-run Kimberly Atkinson home run. The Cobras put the two runners on ahead of Atkinson with a hit by pitch and a single to second base. Atkinson then connected on a deep ball to right field.

Down 3-0, Newberry stormed right back in the bottom of the first, aided by three Atkinson errors at first base.

Neither team would score again until Newberry broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring on a errant Coker throw to win the game.

After allowing three runs in the first inning Newberry pitcher, Kristen Hicks, shut down Coker through the rest of the game. The sophomore allowed just one more hit and struck out five as she went the distance for her sixth win of the season.

Coker’s Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) (1-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in six innings of work.

Coker’s next game will be on Saturday, as the Lady Cobras travel to Queens University of Charlotte for a Conference Carolinas double-header starting at 2:00 p.m.
