Hartsville, SC- The Coker Lady Cobras Softball Team captured their first conference win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating the Belmont Abbey Crusaders 6-4 in game one thanks to a walk-off two run home run from Kimberly Atkinson (McBee, SC), her second home run of the game.
Belmont Abbey looked to have things in control holding a 4-0 lead entering the bottom go the sixth inning, but the Lady Cobras were not ready to back down yet. Thanks to a pair of two run homers from Atkinson and Whitney Wallett (Sherman Dales, PA), Coker tied the game at four apiece entering the final inning.
Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) (1-3) earned the win going five innings, allowing one run on two hits for Coker
Carrie Markham (2-3) took the loss allowing six runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work.
In game two, the Lady Cobras started right where they left off in game one, as they plated a run in the first and seven in the second and then added three insurance runs in the fourth, for 10-0 victory in five innings.
Catlett (2-3) earned her second win of the day, throwing four innings of shut out softball, allowing just two hits for Coker.
Jessica McPherson (0-4) took the loss for the Abbey, allowing eight runs on seven hits, with five walks in two innings of work.
Leading the Cobras at the plate on the day was Atkinson, going 4-for-6 with three home runs and six RBIs, while Jessica Blackwell (Hartsville, SC) was 4-for-7 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Wallett finished the day going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Haleigh Rogers (Ward, SC) was 3-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored.
For Belmont Abbey, Jessica Inman was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, while Candace Cady was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Abby Threatt was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Coker returns to the diamond on Tuesday, as they travel to Newberry College for a double-header starting at 2:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey will travel to Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday for a double-header.
