Hartsville, SC- In their final home game of the 2006 season, the Coker Softball Team did what they have done five other times this year, split a CVAC double-header. Today marked the sixth time that the Cobras have split a CVAC double-header, this time splitting with Mount Olive, loosing the first game 4-3 and winning the second 5-2.  Coker improved to 12-8 in the CVAC and 27-16 overall, while Mount Olive is now 7-13 in the CVAC and 24-27 overall.

 

Game one was a close one as Coker struck first scoring a run in the second for an early 1-0 lead. Coker held the lead until the fourth, when Mount Olive scored two runs off three hits and a Coker error. However, the Cobras would tie the game at two in the fifth off a Marie Mascio sacrifice fly, unfortunately, the Trojans would score two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 4-2 lead.

 

Coker tried to make a come back in the seventh, as Amy Shelley led off the inning with a triple and then scored, but the Cobras were unable to put together any more offense.

 

Amanda Shelton (9-8) took the loss, going five and two-thirds strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits, with four strike outs.

 

Krystal Bourne earned the win for Mount Olive, going five innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

 

Kimberly Atkinson led the Cobras at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Anna Lucas was 2-for-4.

 

Mount Olive was led by Tiffanie Pittman, going 3-for-4 and Erin Wilson going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

 

In game two, Coker came out swinging scoring four runs in the first inning compared to Mount Olive’s one. Mount Olive scored a second run in the fourth, but Coker answered with a final run in the fifth to secure the win.

 

Somer Bigham (14-7) was lights out for the Cobras, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out 13.

 

Mount Olive’s Shauna Cowdrey took the loss, allowing five runs off eight hits.

 

Atkinson led the way again, this time going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Eunice Nettles, Jacque Stewart and Bigham were each 1-for-3 with and RBI.

 

For the Trojans, Georgette Richardson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rigil Gruca was 1-fro-3 with an RBI.

 

The Cobras now prepare for the CVAC Tournament on April 20-24 at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC.
