Hartsville, SC- The Coker Softball team bounced back from yesterday’s two loss outing, to defeat the Bulldogs of Barton 4-3 and 5-0 in collegiate softball. With the wins the Lady Cobras improve to 21-12 overall, and 6-4 in the CVAC, while Barton drops to 7-14 overall and 1-5 in the CVAC.

 

In game one, with the score dead locked at three apiece in the bottom of the sixth, Coker’s Amanda Shelton leadoff the inning with a walk, putting the go ahead run on base for the Cobras. After Whitney Watts came on as a pinch runner for Shelton, Amy Shelley bunted Watts over to second. Watts would then score after two past balls, giving Coker a one run lead.

 

Coker pitcher Somer Bigham (10-4) held off the Bulldogs in the seventh sitting them down in order and preserving the win for the Cobras, 4-3.

 

Bigham threw seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, with 13 strikeouts, while Barton’s Claire Severt took the loss going five and a third innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, with nine strikeouts.

 

Leading the Coker offense was Marie Mascio, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while three Barton hitters went 2-for-4; Jenna Gregory, Emily Sale and Christina Gurley, with Sale and Gurley each chipping in an RBI for the Bulldogs.

 

Game two, saw Coker pick up right were they left off, scoring a run in the first for an early 1-0 lead. Barton held the Cobras scoreless for the next four innings, until Somer Bigham hit her first home run of the season giving for a 2-0 lead. The Cobras added three more runs in the sixth, as Kimberly Atkinson dropped a three-run bomb on the Bulldogs and secured the Coker victory, 5-0.

 

Amanda Shelton (8-4) earned the win tossing a complete game shut-out, allowing only three hits, while striking out eight.

 

Barton’s Jessica Mitchell took the loss, going six strong innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with six strike outs.

 

Offensively for the Cobras, Bigham was 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored, while Atkinson was also 1-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and a run scored. Marie Mascio finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for Coker as well.

 

For Barton, Jennifer Chambers, Jenna Gregory and Courtney Bunch each collected one hit.

 

Coker will take to the field on Saturday, April 1, as they host eh Limestone College Saints at 2:00 p.m.
