Hartsville, SC- The Cobras Softball Team got off to a slow start as they lost the first game of a double-header versus West Liberty State 5-0. However, Coker would redeem them selves in the second game defeating the Toppers 7-2.

 

In game one the Cobras could not get their bats going, as they only managed to get two hits of West Liberty’s Tabi Merceruio. Merceruio earned the win tossing a complete game shutout, while allowing only two hits and striking out seven.

 

Coker’s Amanda Shelton (5-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in four innings worth of work.

 

Jamie Horton and Marie Mascio collected Coker’s two hits and Jessica Blackwell had three walks in the game.

 

For West Liberty, Tiffany Martin was 4-for-4 with an RBI and Rachel Mason was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

 

Game Two saw a renewed Cobra softball team take the field, as Coker came out swinging and scored a run in the first and four more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. The Toppers cut into the lead with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but Coker added a run of their own in the fifth as well, to take a 6-2 lead. Coker would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-2 victory.

 

Coker pitcher Somer Bigham (8-3) earned the win throwing a complete game eight hitter, allowing two runs and striking out 10

 

Gina Kokoskie took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in an inning worth of work.

 

For Coker offensively Anna Lucas was 3-for-3 with and RBI and three runs scored, while Marie Mascio was 1-for-2 with a home run an RBI and a run scored. Amy Shelley was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Cobras as well.

 

West Liberty State was led by Mariah Hulsey and Kylie Earlwine, who were each 2-for-4.

 

Coker returns to the field for their tenth game in the last nine days tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. versus Fairmont State at home.
