Hartsville, SC- Catawba College became the first team of the 2006 season to sweep the Coker College Softball Team with scores of 6-0 and 5-3 in collegiate softball on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Cobras drop to 11-4 overall, while Catawba improves to 8-10 overall.

 

In game one, Catawba pitcher Lindsay Ettinger (6-7) tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. Taking the loss for Coker was freshman Shelly Catlett (2-1), throwing seven innings, allowing six runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and a walk.

 

Coker’s three hits came from Christan Morabito, Amy Shelley and Marie Mascio. The

 

Indians were led by Amanda Mitchell going 1-for-2 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored, while Ryann Baker was 2-for-3.

 

Game two saw Coker strike first, scoring a run in the first and a run in the fourth, but Catawba would not be shut down. The Indians answered with three runs in the fifth to take the lead, but the Cobras would not be silenced, as the tied the game at three in the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately for the Cobras, Catawba would score another two runs in the top of the sixth and then proceeded to shut down Coker over the next inning and a half and defeat the Cobras 5-3.

 

Coker’s Somer Bigham (6-2) took the loss pitching six and a third innings, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out nine and walking two.

 

Ettinger (7-7) earned her second win of the day after coming on in relief in the second inning, allowing two runs on five hits, with three strikeouts in six innings worth of work.

 

Leading the Coker offense in game two was Anna Lucas going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Also earning two hits for the Cobras was Morabito going 2-for-4.

 

For the Indians, Cassie Markham was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Baker was 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.

 

Coker will take the field again on Friday when they travel to Francis Marion for the Francis Marion Softball Tournament at Freedom Florence.
