Thomasville, N.C.- Somer Bigham of Coker College (3-1 overall, 0-0 CVAC) has been selected as the CVAC women’s softball “Pitcher of the Week”.  Somer Bigham earned two of the Lady Cobras three wins in the opening week of play.  She earned wins over Benedict College and Johnson C. Smith University.  In her win over Benedict, Bigham came in the game in relief for the final three innings and earned the win as Coker defeated Benedict 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh.  In her second game of the week, Bigham pitched a gem against Johnson C. Smith, throwing a complete game no-hitter, striking out 15 and only walking one.  For the week, Bigham recorded 19 strikeouts with only 4 hits and 4 walks in 11.1 innings of work.

 

Sharleen Ashby of Erskine College (4-0 overall, 0-0 CVAC) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) women’s softball "Player of the Week".  Sharleen Ashby got the 2006 season off to a great start with 2 hits in 3 at-bats including 1 home run in Erskine’s opening game of a double-header against Southern Wesleyan University.  The junior third baseman also picked up 2 RBI in the opening game to lead the Fleet to a 3-0 victory over SWU.  After a solid first game, the Warriors opted not to throw hitable pitches to the Pickens, SC native in the second game of the double-header and walked Ashby in all 3 of her at-bats.  Ashby also contributed to Erskine’s defense with 3 put-outs and 4 assists for the day.  The Fleet picked up their second victory over the Warriors, 2-1, to complete the sweep.
