MEN'S TENNIS MAKES HISTORY AT ITA REGIONALS
Sumter, SC - For the first time in program history, six Coker men's tennis athletes were selected for the ITA Southeast Regional tournament, with four of those athletes winning opening round matchups.
Sam Winter has continued his stellar spring, winning his first two singles match-ups as well as a doubles match-up. In the opening round, Winter defeated Converse's Takuma Furumaki 6-4, 6-1 to reach the next round. In second round action, he recorded a dominant performance against Lander's Ludvig Danielsson, defeating him 6-0, 6-3. Winter came up against Augusta's Enzo Bordini Garutti in a third round match-up and fell 4-6, 2-6. He competed valiantly in that match against an athlete that is playing today for a spot in the final.
In doubles, Winter partnered up with Sharif Vossen to win their opening round match-up 8-6 against Augusta's Garutti (who defeated Winter in the singles draw) and Alexis Bailhache. They then fell to a seeded pairing from Lander in Danielsson (who Winter beat in the singles draw) and Markus Sorensen in the second round. The other Cobra pairing to earn a victory was Tom Lamers and Benedikt Wittmann, who defeated Mount Olive's Oliver Winterhagen and Hampus Hagglund 8-5 in the first round. Just like their counterparts, the duo lost to a seeded pairing in the second round as they were defated 7-9 by North Greenville's Juho Kantola and William Hernandez in a tight match-up that came down to a few key points.
Coker tennis will be back in action in Florence this weekend, as they will host the Coker Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Florence Tennis Center.
