Cobras Conquer the Trojans in Men's Tennis, 6-3
The Coker men’s tennis team got its 2013 season off to a smashing start as they defeated the Trojans of Anderson University 6-3 on Saturday (Feb. 2).
ANDERSON, S.C. – The Coker men's tennis team got its 2013 season off to a smashing start as they defeated the Trojans of Anderson University 6-3 on Saturday (Feb. 2).
With just one member of the Cobras returning from last season's team, it was the newest Cobras that stepped up to help bring home the win. Andre Staab and George Handy started the match with a 9-8 (8-6) win at No. 1 doubles. James Corfield and Martin Moncayo followed with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, giving Coker a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.
Staab earned a pivotal 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles and Tom Sizeland picked up a come from behind win at No. 2 singles. Heading to the No. 5 singles match, the Cobras clung to 4-3 lead, but thanks Corfield's 6-3, 6-1 win, Coker took a 5-3 advantage. Moncayo capped off the match with a win at No. 6 singles, giving the Cobras the 6-3 victory.
Along with their female counterparts, the Cobra men will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 8) at Lander University. The match is slated to start at 3 p.m.
