FIVE FROM MEN'S SOCCER NAMED TO UNITED SOCCER COACHES' ALL-REGION TEAM
Kansas City, MO - The United Soccer Coaches Association put out a release of their DII All-Region honorees for men's soccer recently, and yet again the Cobras find themselves with a multitude of names on the list.
Between the teams, Coker finds themselves with five on the list: one on the first team, two on the second team, and two on the third team. The lone honoree on the first team was junior Frederic Benedix. Benedix had himself a season, recording 4 goals and a record-breaking 16 assists for 24 total points. That assist mark shattered the previous Coker mark by five goals and he now sits second all-time in assists in program history with 23 (the record is 27). He also was named a First-Team All-SAC honoree, D2CSC Academic All-Region and All-American, and Second-Team D2CCA All-Southeast Region.
Our two second-team honorees were freshman Oskar Kaufmann and senior Matty Tricker, both of which had stellar seasons for the Cobras. Kaufmann had a team-leading 12 goals to go along with 7 assists for a total of 31 points (which was also a team-high). He was a Second-Team All-SAC honoree and was named the SAC Freshman of the Year for his efforts. Tricker has had a handful of personal honors for leading a stud Coker backline. He was named First-Team All-SAC, SAC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CSC Academic All-Region and All-American, First-Team D2CCA All-Southeast Region, and Third-Team D2CCA All-American.
The third-team honors included senior Nikola Sotra and junior Vitalis Takawira Jr. Sotra led the team as a captain and had many veteran-esque moments, including a huge goal in overtime against Auburn-Montgomery that sent the Cobras into the Sweet Sixteen. He was also a D2CSC Academic All-Region and All-American honoree and won the SAC's Elite 23 Award, given to the conference men's soccer athlete with the highest GPA. Takawira Jr. was a second-team All-SAC winner while recording 8 goals (second on the team) and 6 assists for a total of 22 points in his first year with Coker.
