Coker Drops Tight Contest Against Newberry

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's soccer team dropped a tight 4-3 contest to the visiting Newberry College Wolves on Wednesday (Sept. 13) evening to open up South Atlantic Conference Play. 

Trailing 1-0, Aladdin Elfares put the Cobras on the board and tied the match at one apiece when he beat his defender and buried a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal in the 30th minute. The Cobras and Wolves headed to halftime notched up at one. 

The Navy and Gold came into the second half firing on all cylinders offensively by tallying back-to-back goals for a 3-1 lead. Elfares began the second half scoring by firing a shot past the Newberry goalkeeper on a free kick for his second score of the night. Next, Jacob Simonis put himself in excellent position and tallied Coker's third goal off a header in the 58th minute. Steffen Husum was credited with the assist from his well-placed corner kick. 

Elfares, who recorded two goals off of seven shots on goal, led the Cobras offensively. In addition, Simonis made significant contributions on the offensive end adding one score off of three shots on goal. 

The Cobras will return to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 16) when they host Francis Marion at 7 p.m. on the Coker Athletic Field.
