Cobras Blank Lions in Saturday SAC Showdown

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – A pair of second-half goals propelled the Coker men's soccer team (5-3-1, 3-2 SAC) to a 2-0 win over the visiting Mars Hill University Lions in Saturday's South Atlantic Conference matchup.

The two sides excelled defensively in the opening 45 minutes, keeping the scoresheets blank after the opening half.

A Mars Hill foul in the box in the 55th minute gave Coker's Alvaro Urena the opportunity to take and net a penalty kick. The junior found the back of the net for the sixth time this season and gave the Cobras a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Jaedon Williamson joined in on the scoring, when his shot deflected off a Mars Hill defender and found the twine for his first goal of the season. The Coker defense would remain strong in the final thirty minutes, securing the shutout and the 2-0 win.

Williamson led the way for the Navy and Gold, recording five shots, three shots on goal and one goal. Urena finished with two shots, one shot on goal and one goal. Aladdin Elfares also chipped in two shots and one shot on goal. In goal, Michael Ritterbeck collected six saves in the shutout.

The Cobras will travel to Wingate University on Wednesday (Oct. 5) to take on the Bulldogs in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
