HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's soccer team defeated the Shorter University Eagles, 4-3 in a non-conference Homecoming matchup on Saturday (Oct. 6) evening. The Cobras improve to a record of 7-3 on the year, and remain at 3-1 in the conference.
The Cobras took command in the first minute of the game, when Carlos Recinos scored on a penalty kick. Just 17-minutes later, Recions added another point to the scoreboard when he received a pass from Stephen Scrivens and found nylon once again. Only 20-minutes into the game, Coker was in control 2-0.
Shorter forward Hayden Bell responded with a goal of his own in the 31st minute to keep the competition close at 2-1. Matt Taylor however, had other plans for his team when collected a rebound inside the box and put it away to keep the Cobras up two goals. Coker held a comfortable 3-1 lead at the half.
In the second half the swift-footed forward Daniel Jackson danced inside the Eagle box, and fired a shot passed the Shorter goalkeeper. With just over 15-minutes remaining in the game, Coker was in control 4-1.
A quick offensive surge for the Eagles came in the 86th and 87th minute, when Shorter scored back-to-back goals to make the competition a one-point game.
With time dwindling down, the Cobra defense tightened up to preserve a 4-3 win.
The Coker men's soccer team will resume Conference Carolina play when they travel to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday (Oct 10). The game is scheduled to commence at 2 p.m.
