GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Coker Cobra men’s soccer team pulled off the first upset of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Tournament, as the #6 seed Cobras defeated the #3 seed Limestone Saints in penalty kicks 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

In a tightly contested defensive battle, both teams managed to keep the scoreboard clear through 110 minutes of play, forcing a penalty kick shoot out. Both teams sent five players to the line and the Cobras found the back of the net on three of their five shots, while the Saints managed just two goals.

Rommel Fondin (Palm Bay, Fla.), Marc Mergena (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) and Akeem Prendes (Oakville, Ontario) each scored for Coker, while Limestone goalkeeper H.B. Lockwood had two huge saves on shots from Tyler Senecal (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) and Daniel Shirzad (Orlando, Fla.).

The Saints Keegan Ziada, Joe Barber and Lee Smyth had the unfortunate luck of missing all three of their shots, while Mike Stephenson and Jake Bailey both scored for Limestone.

Coker goalkeeper, James Sweeney (Huntingtown, Md.) was spectacular in the net for the Cobras with eight saves in the match, while Lockwood registered five saves for the Saints.
