Hartsville, S.C. – The Coker men’s soccer team earned their first shutout win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Chowan University on Wednesday night. Ryan Lewis (Satellite Beach, FL) picked up the shutout in net for the Cobras, with Marc Mergena (Port-au-Prince, Haiti), Don Jackson (Bradenton, FL), AJ Sweeney (Huntingtown, MD) and Ben Beetch (Palmer, AK) providing the goals. The win improves the Cobras to 5-10-2 overall, while Chowan falls to 0-17.

Mergena got the first goal for Coker just nine minutes into the match with a blast from the top of the 18. Jackson found the back of the net for the Cobras second goal in the 43rd minute off a corner kick from Beeze Chastain (Moonville, SC).

In the second half, Sweeney got his first goal of the season in the 69th minute with an assist from Peter Lobona (Atlanta, GA), and then in the 77th minute Beetch scored the final goal of the match with an assist from Stefan Voukes (Winter Park, FL).

Chowan keeper, Josh Cenci had four saves in the game, while Lewis had two for Coker.

The Cobras return to action on Saturday, as they host Conference Carolinas rival St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 4:00 p.m.
