Hartsville, S.C. – It took two overtimes, an hour lightning delay and 110 minutes of play and the soccer match between Brevard and Coker still ended in a 1-1 tie. The tie moves the Tornados to 0-1-1 on the season, while Coker is 1-0-1.

The first half the match was about as even a match as could be played with Brevard registering five shots and Coker getting off four and the half ending with a 0-0 tie. It wasn’t until the second half that things got interesting. In the 63rd minute Matthew Jarrett (Roswell, GA) found the back of the net in a rather peculiar way. Brevard goalkeeper, Jerry Hatsady, tried to clear the ball out of the Tornado zone from just outside the 18 yard box, but his kick was deflected by Jarrett back into the goal, giving the Cobras a 1-0 lead.

Brevard evened the score at one in the 78th minute as the Tornados were awarded a penalty kick thanks to an unintentional Coker handball inside the penalty box. Brevard’s Ian Townson (Boiling Springs, SC) took full advantage of the opportunity, finding the back of the net on Coker keeper Joel Tyson (Irmo, SC).

Four minutes later both teams were forced to put the breaks on, as the officials stopped play due to lightning for the next hour. When play resumed with eight minutes left, both teams had their fair share of opportunities, but were unable to get the game winning goal, sending the game into overtime. After 20 more minutes of play and two more shots on goal, neither team had scored and the game ended in a tie.

Hatsady had three saves in the game, while Tyson had four. Brevard edged out Coker 14 shots to 13, while the Tornados also committed 13 fouls to Coker’s 11.

The Cobras return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 3, as they travel to Wingate for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off, while Brevard also returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Erskine College for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
