MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Ryan Capdepon tallied a goal and an assist, while Ryan Adamski, Adam Caston and Chris Jasso added two assists apiece as regionally eighth-ranked Mount Olive extended its winning streak to five with a 6-1 victory over Coker in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s soccer Tuesday at Trojan Field. The Trojans have outscored their last five opponents 20-3.
Mount Olive (8-5-0 overall, 2-3-0 CVAC) opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Capdepon captured a loose ball in the attacking third and played the ball wide to Jasso, who crossed the ball to Adrian Daniels. Daniels headed the ball inside the right post to extend his goal-scoring streak to four consecutive matches.
Capdepon scored the Trojans’ next goal at the 28:09 mark as he got a touch on Adamski’s throw-in to put Mount Olive up 2-0. Coker (3-9-0, 2-4-0) pulled back within a goal 79 seconds later when Dennis Gonzalez beat the Trojan defense and crossed the ball to Sean Maupin, who scored from 15 yards out. But Mount Olive answered five minutes later as P.J. Pugliese took a cross from Jasso to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Mount Olive held a two-goal lead until the 71st minute when the Trojans broke the game open with three goals in less than eight minutes. Trojan scoring leader Bradley Carroll began the spurt at the 70:08 mark as he collected a loose ball in the box for his fifth goal of the season. Adamski found Edwin De La Cueva all alone at the top of the box two minutes later to extend the Trojans’ lead to 5-1. Jordan Covington completed the scoring at the 78:06 mark on an assist by Caston.
Chase Smith recorded one save in 76 minutes in goal for Mount Olive, while Bryan Stitz played the final 14 minutes. Coker starting goalkeeper Nathan Scales recorded five saves in 73 minutes, while Joel Tyson added one save in the final 17 minutes. The Trojans outshot the Cobras 20-5.
Mount Olive is ranked in the NSCAA Division II Southeast Region Top 10 for the first time this season, landing in a four-way tie for eighth place. The Trojans are among seven CVAC teams in the top 10.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae in a CVAC match-up. Lees-McRae is part of the four-way tie at No. 8 with Mount Olive. Last year’s contest ended in a 1-1 draw. Match time is 3:30 p.m. Coker celebrates Homecoming Saturday at 1 p.m. against Montreat.
