Hartsville, SC- The Coker College Men’s Soccer program earned their first win of the season in dramatic fashion. The Cobras defeated the Hawks of Chowan University 5-0; to give head coach Robert Lane his first collegiate victory as a head coach.

Coker did not strike first until late in the first half, when Dennis Gonzalez scored a great goal, after faking out the Hawk defense in the box and buried the ball in the back of the net. The score remained 1-0 until the 46th minute, when Sean Maupin scored a one timer on a cross from Olivier Harper. Freshman Zach Sneed gave the Cobras a three goal lead at the 51st minute and just four minutes later Gonzalez tallied his second goal of the night, when Jake Wyman fed him a ball just outside the 18 and Gonzalez slid the ball past the Chowan keeper. The Cobra men capped off the scoring when Wyman gave Marshall Thomas a great touch, that Thomas turned a fired into the net for a 5-0 win.

Coker goalkeepers Nathan Scales and Jeremy Smith combined for the shut out, although either had save, as the Cobra defenders held the Hawks to only two shots I the game. Chowan keeper Josh Cenci recorded four saves in the game.

Coker (1-2) will take on cross town rival Francis Marion University in their next match on Friday, September 8 at 4:00 p.m. at Francis Marion.
