MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.Warren Atkins’ goal 10 minutes into the second half broke a 1-1 tie and sparked a run of three goals in four minutes as regionally fifth-ranked Mount Olive defeated Coker 5-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s soccer Wednesday at Trojan Field. With the win, Mount Olive remains the lone unbeaten and untied team in conference play.

Mount Olive (10-2-0 overall, 6-0-0 CVAC) scored the game’s first goal when Charles Williams found Chris Jasso by the left post for an open shot. The Trojans appeared to be headed into intermission with a one-goal lead, but a Mount Olive foul in the box as the clock ran out led to a penalty kick by Gibson Baafour/North Augusta, SC with no time on the clock as Coker (0-5-1, 0-3-1) tied the contest 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Jasso served a corner kick to Atkins, who put the ball in the back of the net at the 55:07 mark to give the Trojans the lead for good. Less than three minutes later, Reid Clewis put back a shot by Cory Worrell that had hit the post to extend the lead to 3-1. Worrell, who ranks in the top five in the nation in goals and assists, added a goal 66 seconds later on an assist by Atkins, who is tied for second in the nation in assists per game. Matt Hobbs closed out the scoring in the 65th minute on an acrobatic back heel shot.

After scoring only one goal on 12 shots in the first half, Mount Olive scored four goals on its first six shots in the second half. The Trojans outshot Coker 22-7 for the match.
