Cobras Fly Past Falcons For Non-Conference Victory

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College men's lacrosse team took down the University of Montevallo on Sunday (Mar. 24) 12-9 as the Cobras moved to 5-5 on the season.

Both teams netted a pair of goals in the opening quarter to keep it level as Nicholas Maddox provided the assist on goals for Lucas Hediger and Ethan Irizarry. Maddox would score one of his own early in the second quarter after a slick pass from Joe Venazio. Later in the quarter Venazio would net a goal of his own before dishing to Andrew Dappen for a goal with six minutes until halftime. Irizarry connected with Hediger for a goal and Matt Murphy took the feed from Venazio to stretch the Coker lead to four. Murphy would find the back of the net once again before the Falcons pulled one back to make it an 8-5 game at the half.

Each squad only managed to score once in the third quarter and it was Venazio once again for the Cobras, with Irizarry picking up the assist. After the Falcons cut the Coker lead back down to just two, Venazio and Irizarry would combine once again before another Montevalla goal cut the lead back down to two once again. Coming out of a timeout Coker would extend their lead once again with a pair of goals by Irizarry and Murphy, with Maddox and Justin Hopkins picking up the assists as the Cobras took down Montevallo 12-9.

Faceoff man Jason McNeany was outstanding in the win as he won 16 of his 24 faceoffs for the game, while picking a game-high eight ground balls. Chris Hagy locked it down between the pipes as he finished with 11 saves, his seventh game this season with 10 or more saves.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 30) when they travel to face South Atlantic Conference foe Queens at 1:00 PM.
