Cobras Drop Tight Contest at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Coker College men's lacrosse team fell on the road at Embry-Riddle on Saturday (Feb. 16) 10-9 in a close non-conference matchup.

The Cobras jumped out to an early lead after Jonah Robertson found Joe Venazio for the game's first goal 1:30 into the first quarter. Moments later, Matt Murphy tacked on another and Robertson found the back of the net to push the Coker lead to three. After a goal by the Eagles, Venazio fired a shot past the goalie with just three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Eagles dominated the second quarter, scoring five consecutive goals before Venazio assisted Matt Murphy in the waning moments of the half. Ethan Irizarry cut the deficit to one early in the second half before the Eagles jumped out to a three goal lead. With under 10 minutes to play, Coker made a late run starting with a goal by Denton Wilks. Matt Murphy got in on the action once again as he scored two more goals, with one assisted by Nicholas Maddox, to bring the Cobras level with five minutes to play. The Eagles grabbed the go-ahead goal with three minutes remaining and would take the 10-9 win.

Murphy led the Cobras for the second consecutive game with four goals and an assist while Venazio found the back of the net twice. Chris Hagy also made 14 saves between the pipes for the Cobras.

The Navy and Gold will return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 20) when they travel to Mount Olive at 3:00 PM.
