The Coker College men’s lacrosse team (5-5 overall) was held scoreless in the second half in a 11-6 loss to the visiting Queens University Royals
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College men's lacrosse team (5-5 overall) was held scoreless in the second half in a 11-6 loss to the visiting Queens University Royals Saturday (Mar. 31) afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action.
Trailing 4-1 after the first quarter of play, the Cobras found their offensive rhythm and outscored the Royals 5-1 in the second frame of action. Denton Wilks began the Coker run when he ripped a shot past the goalkeeper at the 10:57 mark of the quarter. Next, Charles Stafford streaked down the field in transition and buried his shot into the back of the net just 13 seconds later. The Cobras used an extra-man-opportunity to record their third goal of the quarter when Rylee Marsh dished out an assist to Wilks for his second goal of the game.
Queens finally scored with 4:13 remaining in the second stanza. However, the Queens' score didn't stop Coker's momentum, as Stafford and Matt Murphy tallied the final two goals of the quarter and gave the Navy and Gold a 6-5 lead heading into halftime, their first lead of the game. During the second half, Coker was held scoreless and fell 11-6.
Wilks, Stafford, and Andrew Dappen led the Cobras on the offensive end with two points each. Defensively, DeShaun Ormond and Cole Theodoropolous led Coker by causing two turnovers each. In addition, Ormond led the Navy and Gold in the ground ball department, scooping up three during the contest. In between the pipes, Chris Hagy collected 11 saves.
The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Apr. 7) when they travel to Tusculum to take on the Pioneers at 3 p.m.
