Men’s Golf Finish Strong Day-2
Coker finished in the top-ten
The Coker men's golf team rallied from way back Tuesday afternoon at the Golf Club at Cuscowilla to finish tied for 7th out of 15 teams in a stacked field at the Bobcat Invitational.
Senior Killian Ryan fired an even-par 70, sophomore Derek McGlaughlin and junior Jonathan Hallinger carded 71s and junior Caleb Tidd shot 73 to give the Cobras a 5-over team total of 285, which was the fifth-best score of the day. Coker finished day one tied for 13th after shooting a 17-over 297, which left the Cobras 20 shots back of North Georgia.
Playing one of the toughest courses in the Southeast, Georgia SouthWestern fired 4-under 276 Tuesday to win the team title. A.J. Ewart of Barry shot 65 to win medalist honors at 5-under.
Coker rattled in 14 birdies, hit 40-of-56 fairways, and 40-of-72 greens, converted 19-of-30 up and downs, and averaged 28.2 putts.
"This was an excellent performance by our guys today," head coach John Hackney said. "After a sub-par showing on a tough track in round one, we knuckled down and got it done against a tremendous field. We finished behind six teams....five of which are ranked among the top 12 in the country. We again proved that we can play with the best in the country, and this showing should move us back into the top 10 in the regional rankings.
"Kllian was again steady, making three birdies to counter three bogeys. Derek bounced back from a rough 82 to shoot 71 in a round that included four birdies and two double bogeys. It was his best college round, and he did it on a really hard course, so we were thrilled for him. When he missed greens, he was 6-of-7 on his up and downs. Johnny needed only 26 putts and notched three birdies and Caleb was 4-over through three holes but went 1-under the rest of the way. Senior Fred Tindale carded a 75 to round out the scoring for the Cobras.
"We have another big Southeast Region event at WindRiver in Tennessee next week and will have a few weeks off before our conference championship."
