Men’s Golf in Top Five at Donald Ross Intercollegiate

MORGANTON, N.C. – The Coker University men's golf team completed the first round of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Monday (Oct. 18).

Fred Tindale finished the day tied for ninth place, shooting a 142 (+2) on the day. Killian Ryan is tied for 13th place after shooting a 143 (+3) on the day. Caleb Tidd also sits in 13th place, shooting a 143 (+3) on the day. Michael Marisco is tied for 26th place after shooting a 145 (+5). Derek McGlaughlin is tied for 64th place after shooting a 153 (+13).

Coker is currently in fifth place as a team.

"After a slow start in the morning, we had the best round in the afternoon, which was good to see," said head coach John Hackney. "Fred played solid all day and was really bombing his driver, hitting it as far as 360 yards a handful of times in the afternoon, which left him with some short approach shots."

"We still didn't make a lot of the mid-range putts and didn't convert enough when we were wedging into greens from a short distance. If we did that, we'd be right at the top of the leaderboard. However, that is 3 of our last 4 rounds under par so we're definitely heading in the right direction."

"Our goal is to stay in attack mode throughout the round tomorrow and put up another low round and have a chance to win this tournament. With the temperature around 40 this morning it was tough on everybody to start but once it warmed up, so did we. We had four guys shoot between 68 and 71 in the afternoon, which has put us in a good position heading into tomorrow. We played the par 4s well but struggled a little bit on the par 3s and definitely didn't take advantage of the 3 par 5s, which we plan on doing tomorrow."

The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday (Oct. 19) Tee time is set for 8:30 a.m. Coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com.
