In his second year as Assistant Coach of Men's and Women's Golf, Schmotzer helped coached two South Atlantic Conference players;Killian Ryan and Fred Tindale. Killian Ryan also made an appearance at the NCAA Regionals in Davie, Florida.

Dan Schmotzer re-joined Coker Athletics in September 2021 as the assistant men's and women's golf coach. 

Schmotzer finished his 29-year Coker coaching career with a record of 374-412. 

In his final season at the helm, Schmotzer led the Cobras to a nine-win season, which featured forward Donte Samuels being named to the preseason and regular season All-SAC team and the No. 9 ranking on Nov. 23 in the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America Southeast Regional Poll. 

In 2014-15, Schmotzer led the Cobras to a 12-15 overall record and an even 11-11 record in SAC play, qualifying them for their sixth straight postseason appearance. Errick Bethel and Donte Samuels earned SAC All-Conference honors. Deion Craig was selected for the NCAA leadership forum, and Sean Preston and Gabriel Mens were named to the NABC Honor Court. 

In 2013-14, the first season competing in the South Atlantic Conference, Dan helped guide the men to a record of 15-13. The Cobras made their fifth straight postseason appearance, advancing all the way to the semifinals of the SAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Individually, Julian Nelson received All-SAC Honorable Mention honors, Jonathon Gardner was a Capital One Academic All-District selection and Gardner, Gabriel Mens and Eren Moses were named to the NABC Honor Court. As a team, the Cobras recieved the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.

The 2012-13 season marked the 26th season for head coach Dan Schmotzer at Coker. Schmotzer led the Cobras to a 13-14 record. The Cobras made their fourth consecutive postseason appearance and junior Julian Nelson was a second team all-conference selection. Senior Andrew Morris was named a Capital One Academic All-American, making him just the second men's basketball player to earn the prestigious honor.

Schmotzer arrived at Coker in 1987, becoming the fourth head men's basketball coach in since the program began in 1972. Schmotzer led Coker to a 21-8 record in his first year, the first ever 20-win season in school history since the joining the NAIA. The men's basketball team has recorded three 20-win seasons under Schmotzer.

Schmotzer's quick wit and fiery personality have made him well known throughout the campus and the local community. In 1993-94, Schmotzer was named Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.

In addition to his coaching duties, Schmotzer is an assistant professor of physical education and serves as Coker's Indoor Facilities Director.

Schmotzer had a six year stint as head coach for the men's golf team from 1998 to 2003.  He took over an already strong program and continued to see it grow under his direction where in his final season he was named Region Coach of the Year.

Prior to arriving at Coker, Schmotzer spent 10 years as assistant men's basketball coach at Texas Christian University. In Schmotzer's final season at Texas Christian, TCU was the #4 seed in the East Region of the 1987 NCAA Division I Tournament and came within one point of advancing to the "Sweet 16."

Schmotzer also served as a scouting representative for the Cleveland Cavaliers organization from 1983-85.

Schmotzer also coached and taught at the high school level, spending four years at Trinity High School in Ohio. In 1996, Schmotzer and his twin brother Dave were inducted into the Trinity High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

He played second base for the St. Edward's University baseball team and earned NAIA All-American honors. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Edward's University and his master's from Texas Christian University.

Schmotzer is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time on the links during the off-season. During the summer of 1996, Schmotzer got to play a round of golf with professional golfer Johnny Miller and jazz musician Kenny G.

A native of Cleveland, Schmotzer is a die-hard fan of any team that still calls Cleveland "home". He is also a fan of Princeton basketball and former Princeton head coach Pete Carril.
