Field Hockey Falls to Wingate in Shootout

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University field hockey fell to Wingate in a penalty stroke shootout Thursday night (Oct. 20) by a score of 3-2, with Wingate winning the shootout 3-0. 

The Bulldogs struck first two and a half minutes into the contest, before taking a 1-0 lead to the second quarter and then to the half. 

The Cobras would tie the game just three minutes into the second half, when Kelly Naude scored from Payton Baronella-O'Toole off a penalty corner. 

The teams would head to the fourth quarter tied at 1, before the Cobras would take a 2-1 lead just three minutes in. Kelsey Sithole would score from Kaiya Sabur, before the Bulldogs would score to tie the game halfway through the fourth to send the game past regulation. 

After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to a penalty shootout, with Wingate winning the shootout 3-0. 

Coker out-shot Wingate 21-7 in the contest, led by four each from Naude, Sithole and Baronella-O'Toole. Coda Fisher and Amba Brown each had two shots in the game, while Chase Lennon, Kiarra Rivera, Sabur and Indy Echteld each had one. Emma Reininga played 65 minutes between the pipes, while Mar Hondeman also played 15 minutes. 

The Cobras return to action on Sunday (Oct. 23) to host No. 6 Converse in South Atlantic Conference action. The action is set for 1:00 p.m. from the Coker Athletic Field, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com
