Cobras Pick Up Win Over Local Foe USC Sumter, Drop First National League Matchup of the Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College Overwatch team was back in action on Sunday (Feb. 3) in the Collegiate Overwatch Championship as they took on Western Washington University in the national league and USC Sumter in the regional league. The Cobras were ranked second in the national league with their 4-0 record earlier this week and looked to continue their impressive run.

Coker began their defense of their perfect season against Western Washington University and after a first push on the first map of Numbani, they were slowed down by the Vikings just short of the final point. Now it was their turn to defend and they started off their defense pretty strong. After a couple of fights the Vikings were able to push through the point and get the payload moving forward. They were able to take control of their momentum and continue their push all the way to the end, winning the first map. The second map was Busan and was a must win for the Cobras. Although the Vikings were able to take control of the opening round first, the Cobras were able to take back control and held it until 98%. Western Washington was able to recover and take the point back, but now had to hold it for the rest of the round. They were able to keep Coker away from the point and took the first round. The second round Coker was yet again able to control the point for some time, but the Vikings were able to take it back. Although Andrew Schick was able to keep the Cobras in the round with some nice headshots on his Widowmaker, the Vikings proved to be too strong and won the map. This loss gives Coker their first of the National League season, but they still remain in playoff contention with their 4-1 record.

The second match of the night was the third Regional Game of the season, this time against the University of South Carolina at Sumter. The Fire Ants are a fellow local varsity team and this marked the first time the two schools have faced off against each other. The first map was Watchpoint: Gibraltar and the Cobras started the round by pushing through the map in a quick pace. Next up it was the Fire Ants turn to push and the Cobras were able to hold them at the first point for the majority of the round. Coker did lose sight of the cart though and USC Sumter was able to sneak by and push the payload to the first point. After this Coker was able to rally back and hold them at the second point. The second map was Horizon Lunar Colony and the Cobras started off on the offense once again. Coker did not waste any time and took the first point right away. After a won fight from Sumter, Coker came back and took the point with over 5 minutes left on the time bank. Next it was up to Sumter to attack, and they also got the first point pretty quickly but Coker was able to hold onto the second point after some close teamfights. Sumter got some kills just as their time was running out, but Coker was able to hold and win the match. Coker is now sits at 2-1 in the Regional League.

The Cobras will return to action this Tuesday for a pair of matches against USC Sumter and the University of Central Florida. You can catch all of the action on their Twitch channel over at www.twitch.tv/cokeresports.
