Kyle Gallman ’13, ’16 joined the Coker University baseball program on June 15, 2022. He will serve as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Cobras.
The 2024 season marked Gallman’s second season on staff for the Cobras. The Cobras finished with a record of 31-20 and a 20-10 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. The Cobras would finish 2nd in the South Atlantic Conference and host one half of the South Atlantic Conference Championship tournament. The Cobras won 7 of their 10 conference series match-ups including 3 conference series sweeps. The 2024 win total of 31 would mark their highest since 2013 (38).
The 2024 Cobra pitching staff, again, saw many significant improvements. Under Gallman, the 2024 pitching staff finished 2nd in the South Atlantic Conference in ERA (4.92). The Cobras dropped their team ERA from 5.83 (2023) to 4.92 (2024). The pitching staff also saw increases in wins (31), saves (12), walks per game (3.76), hits per game (9.5), runs allowed (278), WHIP (1.60). Individually, the 2024 season saw Aaron Diaz earn SAC 2nd Team All-Conference for his achievements.
Hunter Poole and Jaylen Mack would go on to be named to the All-SAC Defense team. Poole finished his junior campaign with the Cobras fielding .976 with 208 total chances and only 5 errors. After playing short-stop in his first year with the Cobras, Mack would transition to catcher and field .995 while throwing out 16 of 28 baserunners (57%). The Cobras would also lead the SAC in runners caught stealing (.452) while only allowing 23 stolen bases in 51 games.
In Gallman’s first season on staff for the Cobras, the 2023 squad finished with a record of 19-30 and an 8-16 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. The 19 wins mark a 6-win improvement from 2022 and the teams highest win total since the 2017 season. This also includes wins over regionally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University and 2023 SAC champion Newberry College.
Under Gallman, the 2023 Cobra pitching staff saw significant improvements in nearly all statistical categories. The 2023 team ERA (5.83) was lowered by nearly 2 runs per 9 innings from 2022 (7.69). The pitching staff also improved in wins (19), saves (7), walks per game (4.4), hits per game (10.8), runs allowed (326), and home runs allowed (23).
The Cobras 2023 season also brought great academic success. The team posted a GPA of 3.35 for the 2022-2023 academic year. Five members of the team were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Communicators. Seniors Zack Wall, Ethan Graham and Lawson Otte were named, while sophomores Ashby Vining and Jacob Yarberry earned the academic honor.
Gallman returns to Hartsville after spending seven seasons at Francis Marion University as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Patriots. Across seven seasons, the Patriots compiled a 159-136 record. In Gallman’s time at FMU, the Patriot’s had 11 All-Conference Selections, three All-Region Selections, one All-American, and one Academic All-American.
Prior to joining the FMU staff, he served as an assistant coach under Preston McDonald at Florence-Darlington Technical College for one year working with catchers and hitters, as well as recruiting. Gallman played two seasons each at Coker College and Florence-Darlington Technical College as a catcher and outfielder. He was a member of the 2013 Coker squad that made an appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series. In February 2022, he and the rest of the 2013 baseball team that reached the Division II national championships were inducted into the Coker Athletics Hall of Fame. Gallman earned both a B.S. degree in physical education and sports management (2013) and a M.S. n college athletic administration from Coker (2016).
