HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University baseball team dropped the opening game of their South Atlantic Conference series to No. 16 Newberry College by a 21-9 final.
The Wolves took the lead in the top of the first, but the Cobras responded with solo home runs from Reilly Hall and Bryan Castillo to take a 2-1 lead after one. Coker tacked on another in the second on a Tristen Melvin RBI single to make it 3-1.
Newberry scored one in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to retake the lead at 5-3. Once again the Cobras answered back with a five spot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Coker loaded the bases and scored the first run of the inning on a Tripp Kimmel hit-by-pitch. After a double play drove in the tying run, Andrew Scudder ripped a double down the left field line to drive in the go-ahead run. The Wolves then intentionally walked Hall, but Melvin delivered once more with a single to score Scudder and the hustle of Hall scored him all the way from first on the play to run the margin to 8-5.
The Newberry bats ignited in the second half of the game as they recorded 16 runs in the final four innings of play. The Cobras added one more in the eighth, but it was not enough to overcome the hot-hitting Wolves. Castillo and Melvin led the Cobras offensively, banging out three hits each. Phill Griffor and Hall both contributed two hits in the losing effort.
The Cobras will complete the regular season on Saturday when they host Newberry in a Senior Day doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2pm with live video and statistics available at www.cokercobras.com.
