DUE WEST, S.C. - The Coker baseball team was victorious in its mid-week game against Erskine College on Tuesday (Mar. 1) by a scoreline of 11-5.
The Cobras were held scoreless in the first two innings, but exploded for six runs in the third. Andrew Scudder led off the inning with a walk followed by a single from Reilly Hall. Phill Griffor singled in Scudder and Ashby Vining doubled to score Hall to make the score 2-1. Kody Hanna would single in another run and the Cobras pushed one across on an Erskine error. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Eli Hopkins and Jackson Williams rounded out the inning with a 6-1 margin.
Coker would add to their lead in the fourth, as two more Flying Fleet errors and a Hopkins RBI groundout made the score 9-1. The Cobras tacked on two more runs for good measure in the fifth inning behind RBI singles from Hanna and Brady Jeffcoat to increase the margin to 11-1. Erskine made a late run, but the Cobra lead was too much and they took the win 11-5.
Vining, Hall, and Hanna led the offensive effort for the Cobras as they collected three hits each. Griffor had two base knocks and Jeffcoat and Cory Listing both added a hit. Hanna and Hopkins each drove in two runs, while Griffor, Vining, Jeffcoat, and Williams all had an RBI of their own.
Zack Hinson contributed three innings on the mound to start the game for the Cobras and Cody Chapman threw two innings in relief to pick up his first career victory. Collin Breland also threw a scoreless inning out of the Coker bullpen.
The Cobras will be back on the diamond tomorrow (Mar. 2) when they host the Jaguars of Augusta University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live video and statistics available at www.cokercobras.com.
