MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Coker University baseball team fell to Mount Olive on Friday (Feb. 18) by a score of 8-4.
Mount Olive took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Cobras would respond with a Phill Griffor sacrifice fly to score Ashby Vining and tie things up at 1-1. UMO again took the lead in the third, but a Tripp Kimmel sac fly scored Bryan Castillo and Griffor's single drove in Vining for the second time in the game to level the score at 3-3.
The big blow for the Trojans would come in the bottom of the fifth, when they launched a grand slam to take the lead for good. Castillo would drive in Brady Jeffcoat for the Cobras' fourth run, but it would not be enough as the Trojans took game one of the weekend series.
Coker was led offensively by Vining, who collected two hits and scored two runs for the Cobras. Griffor drove in two runs, while Kimmel and Castillo each also contributed an RBI. Dallas Higuet threw two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit.
The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 19) when they face Mount Olive in a doubleheader. The first game will start at 12 p.m., with the second game starting approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Live video and statistics can be found at www.cokercobras.com.
