HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Shepherd University on Friday (Feb. 11) by a score of 7-4.
The Cobras jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as they capitalized on two Shepherd errors to push a run across the plate. The Rams would strike back with two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth, before Coker added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to draw back within one run of the Rams at 4-3. The Rams would tack on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to increase their margin to four. A Cory Listing solo shot in the bottom of the frame was not enough as the Rams took game one of the three game series.
Coker was led offensively by seniors Phill Griffor and Jackson Williams, who each recorded two hits. Griffor, Listing and freshman third baseman Brady Jeffcoat all registered an RBI in the contest. The Cobras had good efforts out of the bullpen by Tanner Wofford and Jonathan Ford. Wofford worked three innings, giving up two runs and fanning six batters. Ford relieved Wofford and posted two shutout innings and two strikeouts of his own.
The Cobras will be back in action Saturday (Feb. 12), when they host Shepherd for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon, with live video and stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
