WILSON, N.C. - The Coker University baseball team dropped their season-opener to Barton College in hard-fought fashion, by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 1).
Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings, behind strong pitching performances by both starting pitchers. The Cobras would strike first in the fourth inning. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the top of the frame, freshman Brady Jeffcoat reached on an infield single and Jackson Williams rapped a double down the left field line to put Coker in business. Senior catcher Bryan Castillo would step up to the plate and drive in the first two tallies of the season for the Cobras with a two RBI single.
The Bulldogs chipped into the Cobra lead with a run in the fifth inning, before evening the score at 2-2 in the sixth. Barton would eventually take advantage of a few Coker miscues on defense to take a 4-2 lead after the seventh, and added an insurance run in the eighth to make the final margin 5-2.
Freshman Britton Adams led the way on the hill for the Cobras in his first career collegiate start, pitching four innings while only allowing one earned run. Seniors Jackson Williams, Phill Griffor, and Bryan Castillo all contributed two hits on the day, including the two RBI for Castillo. Fellow classmate Reilly Hall also chipped in with a double of his own.
The Cobras will be back in action on the diamond this weekend (Feb. 4-6) when they travel to Wingate, N.C. to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate University. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com.
