Coker Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wingate

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker University baseball team dropped Saturday's (Feb. 29) doubleheader against the Wingate University Bulldogs, by scores of 8-3 and 8-4.

Game One

The Wingate Bulldogs were able to jump out to an early lead, taking control of the game with a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the third. However, the Cobras started to rally back. Harrison Morris brought Casey Demko home on a sacrifice fly to score the first run for the Cobras. In the bottom of the eighth, Reilly Hall hit a sacrifice fly to score Morris for the second Coker run. In the ninth inning, Jonathan Barham launched a solo homer to left field to keep the rally going. Thanks to a good start by Brody McCullough, the Bulldogs managed to hold on for the victory. Aaron Mitchell pitched great out of the bullpen for the Cobras, going 6.1 innings while only allowing one run.

Game Two

Once again, Wingate's offense gave their pitching staff an early lead. But the Cobra bats were able to respond. Phill Griffor homered to left field for his second of the season. In the bottom of the second, Bryan Castillo hit a two-run homer, and Grant Thompson singled to left field to trim the deficit to 6-4. However, Wingate held on for the win thanks to great starting pitching. Griffin Hollifield had another great performance out of the bullpen, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out four.
