Coker Splits Doubleheader Against Anderson (S.C.)

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Coker University baseball team split Saturday's (Feb. 22) doubleheader against the Anderson University Trojans, losing game one 6-1 and winning game two 10-7 in extra innings.

Game One

Saturday's doubleheader against the Anderson Trojans marked the first South Atlantic Conference opponent of the season for the Cobras. Much of game one was a pitcher's duel between Coker's Tanner Wofford and Anderson's Lucas Smith. The first run of the game was not scored until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Trojans took a 1-0 lead.

With Anderson in front 4-0 in the eighth inning, Harrison Morris drove home the first run for the Cobras. Thanks to a complete game performance from Lucas Smith, the Trojans went on to win game one 6-1. Tanner Wofford struck out six over the course of 6.2 innings.

Game Two

While game two may have been a pitcher's duel, game two turned into a slugfest. The Cobras got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Phill Griffor scored on a wild pitch. After the Trojans took the lead in the bottom of the second, Chase Bruno tied the game for Coker with an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Grant Thompson.

Game two continued to go back and forth in the bottom half of the third, when the Trojans reclaimed the lead. However, the Cobras rallied once again as RBI hits from Thompson and Morris tied the score at 4-4. With the Trojans up 7-4 going into the top of the fifth, Reilly Hall doubled to fight field for the first of his four RBI's on the day. Vito Castronovo brought Hall home on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 7-6 after five innings. The Cobras took the lead in the top of the eighth, courtesy of a Phill Griffor RBI single that scored Casey Demko. Reilly Hall padded the Cobra lead with a two-run triple, as Coker went on to defeat Anderson 10-7. Griffin Hollifield earned the win, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Cobras will be back in action for the rubber match of the series against Anderson on Sunday (Feb. 23). First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m., with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
