Cobras Come Up Short in Midweek Contest Against Augusta
Matt Swiderski puts up 2-for-4 effort at the plate
AUGUSTA, Ga.- The Coker College baseball team took to historical Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Ga. on Wednesday, March 21. The Cobras dropped the midweek non-conference contest against the Augusta University Jaguars 5-3. Matt Swiderski provided a 2-for-4 day at the plate for the Navy and Gold.
Coker struck in the top of the first inning for two runs to take the early lead over Augusta. Leadoff batter Reilly Hall drew his team-leading 16th walk of the season to begin the inning's spark. Matt Swiderski proceeded to collect his first of two hits on the afternoon, driving a base hit up the middle. After a fly out advanced both runners into scoring position, RJ Ball belted a two-run double down the left field line to put the Cobras up 2-0.
Augusta took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the third with the help from three hits and two walks.
After the Jaguars scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, Coker responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth. Swiderski led off the inning with his third double of the season, hitting it down the left field line. After a Bryson Conner groundout moved Swiderski over to third, Brooks Estrada provided the run-scoring groundout to second to put the game at 4-3.
Augusta went on to score once more in the sixth as the Jaguars took the 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
Reilly Hall drew two walks on the day, giving him a team-leading 17 for the season. The Coker outfielder also touts the highest on-base percentage at the .471 mark.
With Swiderki's 2-for-4 effort, the freshman raised his batting average by 24 points, improving him to .297 for the season.
The Cobras will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, as they travel to take on the Newberry College Wolves in Newberry, S.C. in South Atlantic Conference play.
