Coker Drops Conference Opener to Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C.- The Coker College baseball team traveled to Salisbury, N.C. for their opening South Atlantic Conference game against the Catawba College Indians and fell on Friday (Feb. 23) at Newman Park. Brooks Estrada led the way for Coker with two hits. 

Brooks Estrada collected two more hits, going 2-for-3 on the night, improving his batting average to .489. The Coker (9-2, 0-1) outfielder now has 16 hits on the season with two doubles, a home run, and six runs driven in.  

Coker (9-2, 0-1) picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth off of a Michael Serafin sacrifice fly. Ryan Caldwell pinch hit for Estrada to lead off the ninth, followed by Charlie Burguieres, who pinch hit for RJ Ball, earned back-to-back walks. After the Indians went to the bullpen, Lake Lybrand pinch hit for Connor Cleary and grounded out to first to put both runners in scoring position. Serafin stepped in and sent the sacrifice fly out to right, scoring Caldwell on the play.

The Coker College baseball team will be back in action with the Indians on Saturday (Feb. 24) for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a full nine inning game, set for 1:00 p.m. Game two is a scheduled seven inning game, starting approximately 4:00 p.m. Results from the games can be found by visiting www.cokercobras.com.
