David Coker has been named Coker University's new men's and women's golf coach, announced today Tuesday, August 6 by Vice President of Athletics and Athletic Facilities, Dr. Lynn Griffin.
"We are excited to announce David as our new head men's and women's golf coach," said Griffin. "David is familiar with Coker, our golf program, and what it takes to be competitive in the region and nationally. I look forward to watching David continue to elevate our golf programs".
Coker has been involved in the golf industry for over three decades, starting as a golf professional at Willow Creek Golf Club and later at Hartsville Country Club. He also has experience in sales, working for Shaw Industries before transitioning back to the golf world.
In addition to his professional experience, Coker has an extensive coaching background. He served as the head coach of boys and girls golf at Hartsville High for eight years, where he was named Region Coach of the Year multiple times for both the boys and girls teams.
Coker's own playing career is also impressive, having competed in Carolinas Section Events during his time as a golf professional. He qualified for two Nike Tour events and won the SCPGA Pro-Pro and SCPGA Pro-Assistant tournaments.
As a collegiate golfer at The Citadel, Coker was named MVP for two seasons and earned All-Conference honors in 1989. He graduated from The Citadel in 1992 with a BA in Business Administration.
David had this to say about his new opportunity "I am very excited to start this new chapter in my life at Coker University. I have always enjoyed working with young people on the golf course and helping them reach their potential. Now as the Coach at Coker University, I can not only help them prosper on the course and win Championships but also influence their lives so they can grow into fine young men and women of integrity and become leaders amongst their peers. It is truly an honor to get this opportunity and I look forward to the challenge. Go Cobras!"
With his extensive experience as both a player and coach, Coker is poised to lead the men's and women's golf programs at Coker University to new heights. His passion for the game and dedication to helping student-athletes succeed both on and off the course make him a valuable addition to the university's athletic department.
Coker's appointment as the new golf coach at Coker University is sure to bring a new level of expertise and leadership to the program. The university is excited to welcome him to the team and looks forward to seeing the impact he will have on the student-athletes and the golf program as a whole.
