Coker Athletics Takes Part in MLK Day of Service
More than 400 Coker student-athletes participated in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday (Jan. 19).
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – On Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, more than 400 Coker College student-athletes volunteered to go out into the Hartsville community and partake in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
The Cobras participated in 37 community service projects throughout the Pee Dee Region. These projects ranged from preparing and serving meals at the Hartsville Soup Kitchen, to playing basketball with children at Centerville Community Park.
“Partaking in the day of service was eye-opening to me,” said junior men’s basketball player, Trey James. “I grew up in the Pee Dee, so to be able to work with kids where I come from is important. As an athlete and human being, it is my job to continue Dr. King’s legacy through my contribution to the community with projects like today.”
Coker Athletics has participated in the Day of Service for four years and Coker College Vice President of Athletics and Facilities, Lynn Griffin, could not be more pleased.
“The Martin Luther King Day of Service has helped elevate the character of our student-athletes,” said Griffin. “When we started this initiative on campus it was to simply honor Dr. King, but four years later it has become something the student-athletes look forward to. I am proud of them all for their continued effort to be upstanding citizens and human beings.”
